The data used to create the search results -- which are also known as the Knowledge Panel -- are drawn from a broad range of sources. This includes data from various companies that provide the information and from multiple Google databases including data on the company’s own Chrome browser. But while Google has the data, developers have always had to ask Google permission to access the same data, which has limited its ability to effectively control the information. On Wednesday, the company is making that permission system public, giving developers access to the same data as Google to build more efficient search results. “This is a big step in the right direction for Google,” said Kalev Leetaru, chief scientist at digital advertising company Rocket Fuel. “It’s making a step back and bringing the developer community closer to the data.” Facebook’s (FB.O) open-graph initiative for developers is the closest, Leetaru said.
